I can here it now......
"You're a animal killer but you have cute nicknames for your dogs, like their part of your family. " Yep its true, everybody in this family has cute nicknames. Besides I teach my sons that even though we love our pets like family members, their still animals, just like the deer and other animals we harvest from the woods. My kids understand this, for example, they don't do things like put their hands down to grab their food while their eating, animals are unpredictable. They can show their "wild" nature at anytime. They also understand that we, as a family are considered a pack to our dogs. This pack has a hierarchy. Dads on top, moms next and so on, with both of our dogs holding the two lower places. And we take proper actions to maintain this pack structure. Honestly, if something should happen and we were forced to eat our pets to survive, believe me, I wouldn't hesitate to serve up some beagle for dinner. (I spent some time in S. Korea, been there, done that.)
If you look at the time line of human beings, we haven't been around for a long time. Our ancestors were "hunter/ gatherers". We believe in revisiting our ancestry ways. To us it's a form of homage to them.
No we don't go into the woods just to kill helpless animals. The thing to remember is that we are visiting them on their "home turf". They have the upper edge out there. We go into the woods armed with only a camera too. Its not always just to harvest game. My first year hunting with a bow was the best year I ever had and I didn't harvest any deer that year. Just the experience of having deer soooo close was cool enough for me. Not like I didn't try though :) But due to a bad case of buck fever, I couldn't stop shaking long enough to take a proper shot.
Yep, if you're thinking that all this reminds you of a certain rock star, your right. We just present our opinions in a different manner.
